In May, EUNEC members met at their yearly seminar, this time on 'Artificial Intelligence as a Tool for Enhancing Teaching and Learning: when and how is AI useful'. The seminar was hosted and co-organised the Conseil Supérieur de l'Éducation, de la Formation et de la Recherche Scientifique in Morocco

Exchanges on teacher supply: Moroccan Education Council

Education goals in Morocco went through at least two main phases. Up to early 2000s, the main challenge was to make access to basic education universal. Once the access challenge was overcome the quality of education took over in the Moroccan policy agenda, including reducing inequalities in students' access to quality teaching and learning as well as ensuring educational and social justice. Furthermore, recognizing the crucial role of teachers in education quality, enhancing the performance of teaching staff and the overall attractiveness of the teaching profession are top priorities to improve the overall quality of education.

Exchanges on teacher supply: Dutch Education Council

Despite thirty years of policy and other efforts to attract and retain teaching staff, the teacher shortages in the Netherlands persist. The demand for teachers remains high, and the shortages are proving stubborn. The Dutch Minister for Primary and Secondary Education asked the Dutch Education Council to explore ways in which education can be provided in a context of the continuing shortage of teachers.

Since 2000, EUNEC has been organizing seminars and conferences on hot topics on the European and national agendas in the field of education and training, gathering policy makers and stakeholders. The output of the debates during these events is a document called 'the statements' of EUNEC, a common text agreed on by all participants.

2023 European Year of Skills

More than three quarters of companies in the EU report difficulties in finding workers with the necessary skills, and latest figures from Eurostat suggest that only 37% of adults undertake training on a regular basis. In addition, already in 2021, 28 occupations had shortages, showing a growing demand for both high and low-skilled workers. The green and digital transitions are opening up new opportunities for people and the EU economy. Responding to this reality, the European Commission has adopted a proposal to make 2023 the European Year of Skills.

Education ministers adopted conclusions on 'skills and competences for the green transition' and discussed the issue of teacher shortages and attracting high-quality teachers as a cornerstone of a successful European Education Area (EEA).
